6th Annual Whey-ah-wichen Canoe Festival

About $7,000 in prizes will be up for grabs during two days of slahal when Tsleil-Waututh Nation hosts its annual Whey-ah-wichen Canoe Festival on July 11-12.

Slahal – also called bonegame, stickgame or handgame – is a traditional guessing game that has been enjoyed by Indigenous people along the West Coast of North America for centuries.

The two-day tournament at Tsleil-Waututh is part of a celebration of Coast Salish culture at Cates Park (Whey-ah-wichen) in North Vancouver overlooking Burrard Inlet.

It is open to all families, youth and communities. Participants are invited to bring their sticks, bones, rattles and drums for the weekend of alcohol and drug-free family fun.

The double-elimination tournament will take place on Saturday with the single-elimination event on Sunday.
