Halalt First Nation Election
By Tricia Thomas
James (Bert) Thomas has retained his position as Chief at Halalt First Nation after members voted on April 16, 2015. Thomas was first elected chief in 2001 and has been re-elected for six consecutive terms.
Also re-elected were councillors Daniel Norris Sr and Patricia Thomas.
“I would like to thank the members for showing their continued support and standing behind us. As chief and council, we will continue to work in the best interest of our members,” said Thomas. “I look forward to working another term with councillors Dan Norris Sr and Pat Thomas.”
Thomas said they have been working with outside stakeholders to bring economic opportunities to the Nation. Other priorities are to add a kitchen to the gym and start the sewer system project this year.
“The stewardship of the water that flows beneath our land remains integral to our Nation and we will continue to push for improved sustainability.”
Out of the 161 eligible voters, 106 voted. Members cast 47 votes for Thomas, the same amount as the last election, 13 more than his nearest contender and 22 more than the third-place nominee.
